Gazetted to Royal Scots Fusiliers, 1867. Sold out, 1876; came to South Africa, 1877, and served in Galeka-Gaika war, 1877-1879 (medal and clasp). Basutoland, 1889-1891.
Served as Lieutenant-Colonel C. M. Riflemen, in command of Colonial Forces, Bechuanaland, Langberg campaign, 1897 (medal and clasp). Served in Boer War, 1899 - 1902, as Colonel C.M.R. and in command of Colonial Division (despatches) Decorated for services in South Africa, defence of Wepener (Jammersberg Drift). Commanding Cape Mounted Rifles.
