Background

Longyear, Edmund Joseph was born on November 6, 1864 in Grass Lake, Michigan, United States. Son of Isaac and Roanna (Davis) Longyear.

Education

Student of University Michigan, 1883-1886. Engineer of Mines, Michigan College Mines, 1888.

Career

With location party, Marquette, Houghton and Ontonagan Railway, 1886-1887. With J. M. Longyear, Marquette, Michigan, 1887, 88-91, Michigan State Geological Survey, 1888. Pioneered in diamond drilling operations Mesabe Range, 1890, active in development of the mining area thereafter.

Companies which later included manufacturing companies also, Were organized under name of E. J. Longyear Company, headquarters Hibbing, moved to Minneapolis 1911. Served as president to 1924, vice-president, director since 1924. Operations included many areas in the United States, Canada, Cuba, Mexico, numerous European, Asian and African countries.

Retired 1924. Secretary Hibbing school Board, 1897-1898. President Village of Hibbing, 1898-1899. Member budget and distribution committee Community Fund, 1918-1924, chairman 1918.

Member board director Young Men’s Christian Association, 1913-1925. Director Elliot Park Neighborhood House, 1919-1924.
