Commissioned ensign United States Navy, 1919, and advanced through grades to vice admiral, April 1954. Assigned naval duties including commands of submarine, destroyer and battleship, 1916-1941. Chief of staff to task force commander, North Atlantic, engaged in anti-submarine warfare, 1941-1943.

Director naval officer personnel, headquarters, Navy Department, Washington, District of Columbia, 1943-1944. Commanded United States Ship New Jersey (flagship at various times for Admirals Halsey and Spruance), 1944-1945. Commanded naval forces, Northeastern Japan, 1945-1946.

Commanding cruiser div. Western Pacific, 1946-1947. Became assistant chief naval operations Military-Politico Affairs, Washington, 1947.

Now commander 2d Fleet and commander North Atlantic Treaty Organization Striking Fleet, 1954-1955. Commandant The National War College, 1956-1958.
