Eduardo Viana studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lisbon, where he was a student of Veloso Salgado and Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro. In 1905, the painter interrupted his studies and left for Paris.
Eduardo returned to Portugal from Paris after the outbreak of the First World War. During the period from 1915 to 1916 he lived in Vila do Conde and maintained a close relationship with Robert Delaunay and Sonia Delaunay, who had settled there.
In 1920 and 1921 he held his solo exhibitions in Porto and Lisbon.
In 1925 Viana left again for Paris and later traveled through England and Holland. Thereafter, the painter settled down in Belgium, where he lived until 1940.
Upon his return to Lisbon, Eduardo participated intensively in the activities organized there and represented Portugal at the XXV Venice Biennale and the Sao Paulo Art Biennial.
