Vavá was born on 12 November 1934 in Brazil.
Edvaldo played as a main striker (or centre forward) for Sport Club do Recife, C.R. Vasco da Gama, S.E. Palmeiras and the Brazilian national team. In 22 international matches for Brazil, he scored 14 goals, including 5 in the 1958 World Cup (2 in the final against Sweden) and 4 in the 1962 World Cup (one in the final against Czechoslovakia). Vavá played professionally in Brazil, Spain, Mexico, and the U.S. After retiring as a player, he became a professional manager; he was Brazil’s assistant coach at the 1982 World Cup.
