Edward Bauman was born in 1828 at Danzig (then in Germany), the son of a well-to-do merchant.

He was a graduate of the Polytechnic School at Gradentz.
Having decided to practice architecture in America, migrated to the United Nations in 1850. He settled in Chicago and after a period of employment with Edward Burling for ten years, carried on an active practice in his own name. Later Mr. Bauman spent some years in Memphis, Tenn., returning to Chicago after the end of the Civil War. For a time he worked in association with the late Harris W. Huehl, and during a visit to Berlin, Germany, some time later, he passed away at the age of sixty-one.
