Bourne’s first book was 1885’s The History of Surplus Revenue in 1837 that demonstrates his dedication to using the scientific method in his studies. Later he wrote his four-volume Spain in America. This book is credited with "an unequivocally scholarly presentation, in laying a positive assessment of early Hispanic colonization before the [U.S.] American public."
