Edward Buckley

Following his graduation from Yale, Buckley went to San Francisco, California where he started a trading firm, where he acquired a small fortune. He then left San Francisco in 1851, and founded a law firm in Baltimore. Buckley then married Emily Young of Philadelphia, and settled in Baltimore. They had three children. Buckley moved to Philadelphia in 1858. Buckley was the Philadelphia District Attorney, Chairman of the Philadelphia Democratic Party, and a Democratic National Committeeman, and Democratic Nominee for Mayor. Buckley also owned a number of factories, to which he converted to producing ammunition -- which led to his acquiring of a fortune during the Civil War. In 1882, Buckley was elected to congress from Pennsylvania but died before taking office in March 1883, drowning off the New Jersey coast. Buckley served as campaign manager to General George McClellan's 1864 Presidential Campaign. He was a close friend of both President Franklin Pierce and General George McClellan. President James Buchanan was an uncle of his wife.
