He was educated professionally at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He began his career in 1898 as draftsman with the Office of the U. S. Supervising Architect at Washington, later was appointed head of the Engineering Department, in charge of the construction of a number of important Government buildings. Resigning from that position in 1903, Mr. Crane started architectural practice in Philadelphia with John Rankin Hall and Thomas Kellogg and in the twenty years or more that he continued a partner, the firm maintained one of the leading architectural offices in Philadelphia, designing important public buildings there and in other cities.
Well known professionally, Mr. Crane was an early member and Fellow (since 1914) of the American Institute of Architects, and at one time served on the Board of Directors. In Philadelphia he participated actively in the local A. I. A. Chapter and served a term as president between 1919 and 1920.
