Crofton was the son of Sir Marcus Crofton, 1st Baronet and his wife, Catherine (née Crofton) and succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father in 1784.

He served as High Sheriff of Roscommon for 1773 and then sat in the Irish House of Commons as representative for Roscommon County from 1775 until his death in 1797. In 1797 he was offered a peerage but died shortly afterwards, aged 48, before the patent had been completed.
