In 1956 Edward Patrick Cunningham received a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture from University College, Dublin and a Master of Science degree in agriculture in 1957. In 1962 he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Cornell University.
From 1962 to 1970 Edward Patrick Cunningham was a research officer at Agricultural Research Institute in Dublin, and a head of department of animal genetics, from 1970 to 1980, deputy director for research, from 1980 to 1988. From 1990 to 1993 he was a director of Animal Production and Health at the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Rome.
Since 1974 he has been a professor of animal genetics at Trinity College Dublin. In 1988 he went to the World Bank as professor in the Economic Development Institute. He is the author of Animal Breeding Theory (1969), World Livestock Production (1990) and the editor of The North African Screw Worm Program (1993). He is a contributor of over 200 science articles to professional publications.
Edward Patrick Cunningham is a member of the Royal Irish Academy.
