At the age of twenty-one he graduated at Brown University, and during the next two years (1880-82) studied at Boston's "M. I. T."
Beginning as drartsinan in the office of Stone, Carpenter & Wilson, the young man acquired further experience working in a number of offices in Boston and New York. In 1895 Mr. Ely returned to his native city and established a partnership with the late Howard Hoppin, and although he practiced under the firm name for only twelve years before his retirement, in that period he was identified with the design of a number of notable buildings in Providence.
