EDWARD F ELY

Background

Edward F. Ely was born in 1858 at Providence, Rhode Island, United States.

Education

At the age of twenty-one he graduated at Brown University, and during the next two years (1880-82) studied at Boston's "M. I. T."

Career

Beginning as drartsinan in the office of Stone, Carpenter & Wilson, the young man acquired further experience working in a number of offices in Boston and New York. In 1895 Mr. Ely returned to his native city and established a partnership with the late Howard Hoppin, and although he practiced under the firm name for only twelve years before his retirement, in that period he was identified with the design of a number of notable buildings in Providence.

Achievements

• Among these notable works were the first unit of the Rhode Island School of Design, the Goddard Wing, 1898, and the Weld House, 1901, at the Butler Hospital, and Caswell Hah at Brown University, 1903.
