He was elected a Member (Member of Parliament) of the Parliament of England for Devizes 1695 - 1698, for Wiltshire 1698 - 1700 and for Wareham 5 March - 11 November 1701 and 22 February 1704 - 1705. He was elected an Member of Parliament of the Parliament of Great Britain for Wareham 13 December 1710 - 1713 and 1722 - 31 January 1729, for Heytesbury December 1701 - 1702, Marlborough 10 December 1708 - 1710 and Portsmouth 1715 - 1722.
He died on 31 January 1729.
He was succeeded in the baronetcy by a kinsman, Walter Ernle (1676–1732) of Chirton, Wiltshire.
