Edward Jay Friedlander was born on April 24, 1945 in Portland, Maine. He is the son of Otto Friedlander and Marguerite Evelyn (Smith) Friedlander.
Edward Friedlander received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wyoming in 1967. In three years he got a Master of Arts degree from the University of Denver. Edward also holds a Doctor of Education from the University of Northern Colorado.
Edward Jay Friedlander joined the University of South Florida in 1995, as the director of the School of Mass Communications, and held the position until 2010. It is the longest tenure for an administrator in the history of the school. Before joining the University of South Florida Edward served at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where he was the chairperson of the Department of Journalism.
He is the co-author of three journalism textbooks. They are used by more than 250 colleges and universities in the United States and dozens of universities across the world. He has also written more than 25 academic articles and grant proposals, has edited three annual reports for the Federal Communications Commission and one non-fiction book for St. Martin's Press. Friedlander produced one nationally distributed television documentary.
Edward Jay Friedlander was a reporter for newspapers in Wyoming, Pennsylvania, Colorado and Arkansas. His work appeared in 40 newspapers and some magazines. Nowadays Edward is a Professor Emeritus in the School of Mass Communications.
