Gay, Edward was born on April 23, 1837 in Dublin, Ireland. Son of Richard and Ellen (Kilduff) Gay.

Education

Came to the United States, 1848. Began to study art in studios in Albany, New York, 1854. Went abroad, 1862, to study art under Lessing and Schirmer at Carlsruhe, Germany.

Career

Specialty landscapes: took Metropolitan prize of $2,000 in 1887 for the picture “Broad Acres,” presented to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New New York Later large canvases are: “Washed by the Sea”. “Atlantis”; “The Suburbs,” in Tewksberry Collection, New New York

“Where Sea and Meadow Meet” (Governor's Mansion, Albany, New York).

“The Waving Grain” (Minneapolis Gallery of Fine Arts). “Happy Summer Fields,” et cetera, bought by various public galleries.

Received Shaw prize, Society American Artists, 1903. Inness gold medal, National Academy Design, 1905.
