He was awarded the Medal of Honor, for extraordinary heroism on July 2, 1863, while serving as a Second Lieutenant with the 15th New York Battery Light Artillery, at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He died at the age of 74, on March 28, 1916 and was buried at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx, New New York
His Medal of Honor was issued on October 18, 1892. The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Second Lieutenant Edward M. Knox, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 2 July 1863, while serving with 15th New York Battery Light Artillery, in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
