He was the son of Effingham Lawrence (1779–1850), First Judge of the Queens County Court from 1818 to 1823, and Ann (Townsend) Lawrence (1786–1845).

He was buried at the Lawrence Burying Ground in Bay Side.
Membership
As a Democrat, he was Supervisor of the Town of Flushing for twelve years, a member of the New York State Assembly (Queens Company, 1st Doctorate) in 1858 and 1859, and a member of the New York State Senate (1st Doctorate) in 1860 and 1861.
