MAHON, Edward Elphinstone was born in 1851 in Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire. 3rd son of Reverend G. W. Mahon, Honourable East India Company, and Caroline Charlotte, daughter of Captain Henry Clarence Scarman, formerly of the 39th Regiment.

Studied at Cheltenham Grammar School. St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington.
Entered Navy, 1878; served in Zulu war, 1879 (Zulu medal). Present at action of Laing’s Nek, 28 January 1881, and Majuba Mountain (despatches. Specially promoted Staff Surgeon).
Served with Royal Marines in Egypt, 1882. Present at actions of Mallaha Junction, Tel-elMahuta, Mahsameh, Kassassin, 28 August and 9 September, and Tel-el-Kebir. Served with Royal Marine Artillery at occupation of Cairo, and Aboukir Forts (Egyptian medal, Tel-el-Kebir clasp, Khedive’s bronze star, Osmanieh 4th class).
Staff-Surgeon of “ Bacchante”. Served with Naval Brigade, landed with the Army during Burma Annexation war, 1885-1887 (India medal, Burma, 1885-1887, clasp). Deputy Inspector General at the Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar, 1899-1902.
