(This one-of-a-kind, comprehensive history of moral educat...)
This one-of-a-kind, comprehensive history of moral education in American schools provides an invaluable historical context for contemporary debates. McClellan traces American traditions of moral education from the colonial era to the present, illuminating both debates about the subject and actual practices in public and private schools, colleges and universities. He pays particular attention to changing fashions in pedagogy, to church-state conflicts, to the long decline of character training in the schools and to recent efforts to restore moral education to its once-honored place.

Edward Bernard McClellan was born on July 2, 1939 in Huntington, West Virginia, United States.
Edward McClellan studied at Wesleyan University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961. Two years later, he earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati. In 1972, he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree in History from Northwest University.
Edward McClellan began his career as an instructor of History at the Ohio State University, where he worked between 1966 and 1970.
In the autumn of 1970, Edward joined Indiana University in Bloomington as a lecturer in the History of Education, the post he held until 1972. After that, he served there as an assistant professor. From 1977 to 1991, he was an associate professor. Besides, he was chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in 1988-1990 and 1998-2000. For one year, from 1990 to 1991, he held the post of executive associate dean. After that, Edward received the full professorship. Since 2003, he has been a professor emeritus of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the same university.
McClellan's first book, Education and American Culture, was written in 1980, in collaboration with Elizabeth Steiner and Robert Amove. The Social History of American Education was published in 1988 - it is a compilation of seventeen essays, that McClellan and co-editor William J. Reese selected from among one hundred issues of History of Education Quarterly. Edward's book, Schools and the Shaping of Character: Moral Education in America, 1607-Present (1992), describes the metamorphosis of moral education in American schooling throughout the centuries.
In Ed's most recent book, Moral Education in America: Schools and the Shaping of Character from Colonial Times to the Present (1999), he gives another overview of the American educational system. This book demonstrates, that the molding of a child's character is the joint result and responsibility of the family, the school and the church.
Edward McClellan is an outstanding retired educator and author of books on education. He produced foundational work for a long-established, growing and contentious literature in the history of moral and civic education in America. Anne M. Boylan reviewed his book, Moral Education in America, for the Journal of American History in 1993. She asserted, that "the book would have benefitted from a broader conception of moral education." However, Boylan added, that the strongest sections of the book include McClellan's explorations of "the changing nature of character education programs."
