Education

Graduate Charleston College. Admitted to South Carolina. bar, May 1855.

Career

Took part as captain volunteer company, State service, in the taking of Castle Pinckney, Charleston harbor, December 27, 1860. Was present at battle of Fort Sumter, April 12-13. Entered C.S.A. as captain of 1st company raised in South Carolina. for the whole war, June 27, 1861.

Major and lieutenant colonel 1st South Carolina. vols. Severely wounded at Manassas, August 30, 1862. Seriously, injured in camp by falling tree January 27, 1863.

Disabled for field service and transferred to command of camp of instruction, Madison, Florida. March 1864; surrendered May 5, 1865, subsequently major general State volunteer troops. Member House of Representatives, State legislature, 1880-1890.

President History Society of South Carolina., trustee Charleston Library Society, trustee Medical College of South Carolina. Author of Election and Registration Laws of South Carolina., known as the eight box law. Chairman vestry of St. Philip’s Church, Charleston.
