After beginning to work in photographic methods, McHugh began to implement a process he termed a "wax-diffused pigment print." By applying a thin layer of archival wax to the surface of the print, McHugh imbues a painterly brushstroke to the image giving it a uniquely handmade surface, marrying his fine arts background and his photographic process. The Seattle Times described an image of the battleship United States Ship New Jersey treated with this technique, saying that "the effect is both enchanting and unsettling". 2015 Stand Still, Gallery 339, Philadelphia G.
