These and many more television careers await you, all described with loving detail and with case histories which we have carefully screened for libel. People in television will find How to Get Rich in TV Without Really Trying very funny, since they will undoubtedly think that it refers to the other fellow and not to themselves. Others will find it a joyous, headlong romp through a dadaesque part of the American scene.

This is a novel about the men and women who work in the advertising business—not mythical creatures in a world of sincere neckties and gaudy jargon, but ambitious and nervy people who have elected to work in an industry where the pressure is terrific, where the risks and rewards are uncommonly high. Here is how they move to the top, how they stay there, and how sometimes, they don't stay there.

(There are two kinds of women who work, says Shepherd Mead...)
There are two kinds of women who work, says Shepherd Mead, author of How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying and How to Get Rich in TV without Really Trying. One is the Working Girl, the handmaiden of business: she does what men tell her to do-she types, totes coffee, gripes in her cubicle. The other kind is the Career Girl: she thinks like a man, acts like a woman, and can soon end up in a four-window office making more money than anybody.

It is almost impossible to describe the wild and unconventional hilarity of this novel by the author of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. With a Great Gatsby atmosphere and Goonish pace, it tells of a crumbling Long Island Railway station beside the glittering North Shore, where no train stops, or ever will again. Once the station was worthless: now (some say) it is beyond price.

Spy, counterspy, Casanova, and technological Machiavelli, Mark Price is an agent for big business's latest headache, Industrial Espionage. His exploits as he goes about exposing a monstrous conspiracy against the industrial heart of America are at once wild, hilarious, and deadly serious. Along the way he tangles with an assortment of zany characters, including a trio of engagingly odd and highly sexed charmers and a patriarchal embodiment of the American Dream, before his ingenious sleuthing culminates in a shattering climax in the best comic tradition of the Marx brothers.

Mead was a member of PEN, Phi Beta Kappa, and the Montchoisi Tennis Club.
Shepherd Mead was one of those men dogged by success. Like J. Pierrepont Finch, Mead's caricature of a businessman, Mead became a sort of folk hero in his own right - but a folk hero with a message.

On September 18, 1943, Mead married Annabelle Pettibone. They had three children: Sally Ann, Shepherd and Edward.
