Edward Shepherd Mead

Background

Edward Shepherd Mead was born on April 26, 1914, in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. He was the son of Edward and Sarah (Woodward) Mead.

Education

Mead graduate from St. Louis Country Day School in 1932. In 1936, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri.

Career

Mead began his career as a mailroom clerk at Benton and Bowles, Inc., New York City, in 1936, and was promoted up the ranks to the vice president by 1957.

Upon his resignation, Mead fled to Europe with his wife and three children in 1957. He spent a year in Geneva and then went to England in 1958, where, from 1958 to 1962, he later became a consultant for S. H. Benson Ltd., London.

Achievements

• Shepherd Mead wrote nearly twenty books in all, but his most successful and well-remembered work is autobiographical How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying: The Dastard’s Guide to Fame and Fortune, which was the basis for the award-winning Broadway musical (and later film) adapted by Frank Loesser and Abe Burrows. In addition to his other duties, he also wrote soap operas for Procter & Gamble.

Personality

Shepherd Mead was one of those men dogged by success. Like J. Pierrepont Finch, Mead's caricature of a businessman, Mead became a sort of folk hero in his own right - but a folk hero with a message.
