Edward Allen Michelson is an American emergency medicine physician and academic leader. His career has included emergency and internal medicine training, university teaching, residency-program direction, hospital department leadership, and clinical research in emergency diagnostics, trauma, stroke, infection, and traumatic brain injury.
Background
Edward Allen Michelson was born on October 12, 1956, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Norton and Marilyn Michelson. He developed his professional life in the United States, combining clinical medicine with academic emergency medicine and medical education.
Education
Michelson earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where his studies were associated with applied biology and biomedical engineering. MIT's scientific and technological tradition provided an academic setting linking biological science with engineering and innovation.
He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 1982. The medical school is part of Washington University in St. Louis, a major research university whose medical education and biomedical research programs are closely connected with Barnes-Jewish Hospital and the wider academic medical center.
Michelson then completed an internship in internal medicine and combined residency training in internal medicine and emergency medicine at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in Chicago from 1982 to 1986. McGaw is Northwestern's graduate medical education system and has long provided residency training through affiliated hospitals, including Northwestern Memorial Hospital and other institutions in the Chicago medical community.
Michelson began his medical career with internship and residency training at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University from 1982 to 1986. His combined preparation in internal medicine and emergency medicine supported a career spanning acute clinical care, hospital practice, teaching, and emergency medicine administration.
He joined Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine as a member of the medical staff and faculty. From 1992 he directed the emergency medicine residency program at Northwestern, while also serving as an associate professor of medicine. Northwestern Memorial Hospital is a major academic hospital in Chicago, and Feinberg School of Medicine combines medical education with clinical research and patient care.
Michelson later became founding chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, serving from 2002 to 2014. University Hospitals Case Medical Center was the principal teaching hospital associated with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and his work there included building an academic emergency medicine department and developing emergency medicine training. He subsequently served as a visiting associate professor of emergency medicine at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus from 2015 to 2016.
In April 2016, Michelson joined Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso as professor and chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine. The El Paso health sciences center is part of the Texas Tech University System and supports medical education, residency training, biomedical research, and clinical services in the United States–Mexico border region. He has also served as emergency department clinical chief at University Medical Center of El Paso and as an associate director connected with emergency medical services and prehospital care.
His academic work has included research on electrocardiographic interpretation, portable fluoroscopy for detecting glass foreign bodies, quantified brain electrical activity in acute stroke, mild traumatic brain injury, trauma-related coagulation testing, and clinical protocols for suspected infection and sepsis. He has also participated in clinical trials involving headache treatment, traumatic brain injury, and cognitive effects associated with COVID-19.
Michelson helped establish and lead academic emergency medicine programs at Northwestern University and University Hospitals Case Medical Center, including directing residency education and serving as founding chairman of the University Hospitals Department of Emergency Medicine.
His clinical research has contributed to studies of emergency diagnostic methods, including quantified brain electrical activity for acute stroke assessment, emergency-department evaluation of mild traumatic brain injury, and point-of-care coagulation testing in adult trauma patients.
