He entered the office of Clifton Hall, a pioneer architect in Rhode Island. After beginning as an apprentice draftsman, the young man completed his training under Mr. Hall and was later taken into partnership.
In 1872 Mr. Nickerson established practice under his own name, and continued an active member of the profession during the rest of his life. Amonq the early buildings in Providence designed by him was the Grace Memorial Home: the Miller Building; Chapel at the Benefit Street Congregational Church, and a number of private homes.
Well known among his colleagues, Mr. Nickerson was a charter member and one-time President of the Rhode Island Chapter, A. I. A. and in 1872 was made a Fellow of the Institute.
He was married to Lyra F. (Brown) Nickerson, the daughter of a founder of Brown & Sharpe.
