Pessen was born on December 31, 1920 in New York City, New York, United States; the son of Abraham and Anna (Flashberg) Pessen.
Pessen received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University in 1947. A year later he earned his Master of Arts degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1954 from the same university.
Pessen began his career as a lecturer of history at City College of New York in 1948. Six years later he took a position of an associate professor of history at Fisk University. Then in 1956, Edward became a professor of history at Staten Island Community College (nowadays College of Staten Island).
Also he served as a professor of history at Baruch College of the City University of New York Graduate Center from 1970 to 1972. In 1972, Pessen held a position of a distinguished professor of history at the same college. Twenty years later he became Edna Gene and Jordan Davidson professor in the humanities at Florida International University.
Also Edward was a visiting professor of history at Bochum, Wurzberg, Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg universities and at Lund University.
Pessen was a member of the Society of American Historians, American History Association, Organization of American Historians, Society for Historians of Early American Republic, American Antiquarian Society and Southern History Association.
On November 25, 1940 Edward Pessen married Adele Barlin. They have two sons, three daughters and four grandchildren.
