(Excerpt from Elements of Physical Manipulation, Vol. 2 In...)
Excerpt from Elements of Physical Manipulation, Vol. 2 In Appendix (7 are given with some detail directions for the establishment of Physical Laboratories, on the plan of that under the charge of the writer. In this Laboratory, about a hundred stu dents are instructed every year. It has been in operation with but little change, except to enlarge its work, for the past six years, and has therefore had a practical trial on a large scale. A brief list of works of reference is also added, and a short description of a hundred additional experiments. These are especially intended to aid both teacher and student in what should be the aim of every scientific man, the encouragement of original research. The wide range of subjects now included in the term physics, shows that this work is addressed to no narrow circle of readers. The attention of all persons interested in experimental work of any kind is solicited, and of all who believe that the practical method of teaching science, now so largely adopted, is a step in the right direction. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

In the autumn of 1878 an effort was made to secure for theO bservatory an annual subscription of five thousand dollars for five years. It was claimed that, with this, the current work could he doubled, and that much progress might he made in reducing the large amount of past observations which had been accumulating for several years. It was aU uanticipated that the results attained would be sufficient to justify the continuance of this annual increase by means of an endowment. A bout seventy ladies and gentlemen of Boston and vicinity responded to this call, and by their generous aid have placed theO bservatory in its present improved condition. As the subscription terminates this year, the last instalments being payable next March, the present seems to be a proper time to show how far the promised results have been attained. An attempt will also be made to show that the condition of theO bservatory has been so greatly improved by this subscription that it would be most unfortunate that it should relapse to its former condition. A subscription of one hundred thousand dollars is now in progress, and if secured will permit a permanent condition of activity. It will be noticed that the increased amount of work is quite out of proportion to the increase of income. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)
