PRIOR, Edward Gawler was born on May 21, 1853 in Dallowgill, near Ripon, Yorkshire. 2nd son of late Reverend Henry Prior, who was Rector of that parish, and afterwards Vicar of Baston, Lincolnshire.

Studied at Leeds Grammar School, and served his articles as a mining engineer with the late J. Tolson White, M.E., at Wakefield.
Came to Vancouver 1 Island, 1873, as mining engineer and surveyor for the Vancouver Coal Mining and Land i Company. Was Government Inspector of Mines, 1878-1880, when he resigned to commence business as an iron and hardware merchant. Lieutenant-Colonel commanding the 5th Reg.
Canadian Artillery, 90. Honourable Aide-de-camp to the Governors-General of Canada, 1889, and held that position under 1 Lords Stanley and Aberdeen. Commanded the Canadian rifle team at Bisley, 1890.
Was twice 1 President of the Dominion Artillery Association. One of the Canadian contingent present at the late Queen’s Jubilee, 1897. Legislature, British Columbia, 1886-1888, when he resigned at the request of his constituents, and was elected by acclamation the same day to Dominion House of Commons.
Re-elected, 1891 and 1S9G. Controller of Inland Revenue in the administrations of Sir Mackenzie Bowell and Sir Charles Tuppor. Minister of Mines in Local Legislature of British Columbia, 10 March 1902 to 31 May 1903.
Premier of B.C. from 21 November 1902 to 31 May 1903. A Conservative. P.C. (Victoria City).
