Edward von Pechmann Renouf was an American painter, sculptor, and writer. Best known for his abstract paintings, drawings, and iron sculptures, he exhibited widely in the United States, and his works entered numerous museum collections.
Background
dward von Pechmann Renouf was born on November 23, 1906, in Hsiku (Xigu), Tientsin (now Tianjin), China. He was the son of Vincent (J. Vincent) Adams Renouf, an American educator and historian, and Lilli von Pechmann, who came from a distinguished German family associated with the arts and museum administration. Following his father's death in 1910, the family returned first to Germany and later settled in the United States. He died on November 30, 1999, in Washington Depot, Connecticut.
Education
Renouf graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, in 1924. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University in 1928 and subsequently pursued graduate studies in psychology at Columbia University in New York. After his university studies, he traveled in Europe, where he continued his artistic training by studying drawing.
Career
Following graduate study, Renouf continued his artistic education in Europe before relocating to Mexico, where he lived and worked for approximately fifteen years. During this period he developed his artistic practice as a painter and sculptor.
In 1958 he settled in Connecticut and established himself within the American art community. Working across painting, drawing, sculpture, and writing, he became particularly known for abstract paintings and iron sculptures. His work was exhibited extensively throughout the United States, including several solo exhibitions at the Allan Stone Gallery in New York.
