Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Excerpt from The Story of the English Jacobins: Being an Account of the Persons Implicated in the Charges of High Treason, 1794 Tiie occurrences related in the ensuing pages belong to a somewhat obscure period of English annals. As is now pretty generally known, history made up from State papers is more or less defective. The reign of George the Third is yet too near our own times to have become the object of tedious and cautious research: on the one hand, because the passions of the period have not entirely cooled; on the other, in that the latent treasures of many a secret note book lie buried away, as too compromising for the memories of men who have but lately died. Not illustrated. 1911 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXI THE END IN his seventy-fourth year, Banks had one more carriage accident; this time having a rather beneficial result than otherwise, for in the course of a restless night after, he voided a large stone and was consequently relieved from one source of pain. Sir Joseph Banks to Sir E. Home. "Spring Grove, August 27,1818. "My Dear Sir Everard,--I was overturned two days ago by a drunken coachman, but received no hurt. Lady Banks and my sister and I were driving home from dining with Sir A. Macdonald. We are all three rather heavy, and I, as you know, quite helpless. We were obliged to lie very uneasily at the bottom of the coach for half an hour before assistance could be got to lift us out. We all bore our misfortune without any repining or any demonstration of the follies of fear; and we are all now quite recovered from the effects of our accident, except my sister, who has a cut on her head filled with lint and doing very well. But both the ladies have gone everywhere since, without an hour's confinement." This accident was doubtless of more consequence than at first appeared. Mistress Banks died on September 27, after a " slight indisposition," which had not prevented her calling, a few days previously, upon the Princesses at Kew. At the age of seventy-four, she could not afford to be shaken about as described. Mistress Sarah Sophia Banks was a zealous student of Natural History, and a most indefatigable collector of curiosities of all sorts. But her moral worth (says a cotemporary obituary), even more than her talents and knowledge, rendered her the object of esteem and regard to all who had the pleasure of being acquainted with her. The life-long attachment of Sir Joseph and his sister speaks well for both of them. And...

Not illustrated. 1881 edition. Excerpt: ...to fix a place of meeting in such case. On Wednesday, the 4th December, being the fourteenth sitting, apprehensions were uttered of the probability of a violent dispersion of the Convention, and the delegates resolved to continue to assemble, "until compelled to desist by superior force." The next day Margarot and others were arrested, and their papers seized; notwithstanding which, the Convention met again on the Friday at some other place as appointed. But they had not been long assembled before the sheriff appeared. The meeting still refused to disperse, without some display of force. Margarot, who had been bailed, and was presiding on the occasion, was then pulled out of the chair; Gerrald closed the meeting with prayer; the rest of the company departed peaceably; and the British Convention was at an end. It soon became clear that the London Corresponding Society was the principal object of ministerial rancour. The three persons selected for "punishment" were Margarot and Gerrald, the delegates of that society, and William Skirving, Secretary to the Convention. They were all tried, and sentenced to fourteen years' transportation, the judges considering that their crime was aggravated by their not having taken warning from the fate of Messrs. Muir and Palmer. Margarot was brought to trial upon the 13th January, 1794. He made a fruitless endeavour to show that there was no jurisdiction in the Court of Justiciary to try him for his supposed offence, which was "a determined purpose to overturn the constitution." A certain amount of mock courtesy was allowed toward him as a "foreigner," a "stranger from London," &c.; but there was no relaxation of severity on that account on the part of...

politician Member of the New Zealand House of Representatives
Smith was born on 10 January 1839, in Fenny Compton Warwickshire, England. His father Charles METCALF was an Agricultural Labourer, and his mother was Maria Joiner.
He was orphaned by the age of 15. He worked, as a youth, in the iron and steel industry in Staffordshire, probably at Bradley Hill Ironworks and in Cradley Heath, then joined gun makers Hollis in Birmingham, England. He became an apprentice at the new Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield Lock, and also had some connection with the Royal Woolwich Arsenal, London.
When qualified, he was sent on short term assignment as Garrison Armourer and Small Arms Inspector to the New Zealand field forces. He arrived in Auckland, New Zealand in 1861 on the African, and was based at Fort Britomart in Auckland,New Zealand. She was the daughter of the army officer Nicholas Golding.
Smith served as an MP in the House of Representatives, representing the New Plymouth electorate from 1890 for two terms until the abeyance of that electorate in 1896. In the 1896 election, he contested the Taranaki electorate, but was beaten by the saw miller Henry Brown. At the 1899 election, he beat Brown, and represented the Taranaki electorate until his death in 1907.
Smith was one of the characters of the house, known for misplacing aspirates and for concluding speeches with his own verse. He became known as 'Smith', lamenting the "hiron hores lying on the beach and never a man to work them", and for introducing himself as "Hi ham He Hem Smith. Hem Haitch Har" (translation: I am E M Smith, MHR).
Apparently a buffoon, he was a hardworking member, and Seddon often had him follow—and deflate—serious-minded opposition debaters. His attire—a frock-coat, wide waistcoat with buttonhole, and out-of-doors a Tam o' Shanter—was unconventional. Due to his background, Smith was interested in utilising Taranaki's ironsand.
He announced in 1868 that he would experiment with extracting the iron for smelting. In 1873, the partners moved to industrial production. The venture never made any profits and the company was wound up in 1881.
Many people lost money with ironsand ventures, including Julius Vogel. On 19 April 1907, Smith died from injuries he received from a fall from a railway carriage in New Plymouth. Smith's son, Sydney George Smith followed in his political footsteps and became the MP for Taranaki in 1918.
