(Excerpt from History of Chemistry, Vol. 2 of 2 A History...)
Excerpt from History of Chemistry, Vol. 2 of 2 A History of the Sciences has been planned to present for the information of the general public a historic record of the great divisions of science. Each volume is the work of a writer who is accepted as an authority on his own subject-matter. The books are not to be considered as primers, but present thoroughly digested information on the relations borne by each great division of science to the changes in human ideas and to the intellectual development of mankind. The monographs explain how the principal scientific discoveries have been arrived at and the names of the workers to whom such discoveries are due. The books will comprise each about 200 pages. Each volume will contain from 12 to 16 illustrations, including portraits of the discoverers and explanatory views and diagrams. Each volume contains also a concise but comprehensive bibliography of the subject-matter. The following volumes will be issued during the course of the autumn of 1909. (Taddresses given at various times, and to audiences of ve...)
Taddresses given at various times, and to audiences of very different type, during the last forty years. These essays in historical chemistry are now put together with the object of showing how the labours of some of the greatest masters of chemical science have contributed to its development. The book has no pretensions to be considered a history of chemistry, even of the time to which its narratives relate. Many honoured names as Black, Dal ton, Berzelius, Liebig, Hofmann that ought, in all fitness, to find a fuller notice in. such a series of biographical sketches, are only incidentally mentioned. The only excuse I can advance is, that it has not as yet been my good fortune to be in a position to offer an account of their labours. The greater number of the sketches in the present volume have already been seen in print; but in arranging them for republication I have not hesitated to make such alterations and corrections as seemed necessary or desirable in view of their appearance in a connected series. Certain of the lectures, when delivered, were illustrated by experiments of which mention was made in the accounts originally published. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology. Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. Careful attention has been made to accurately preserve the original format of each page whilst digitally enhancing the aged text. Read books online for free at www.forgottenbooks.org
