Commissioned missionary to China. Pastor S. China, 1892-1895. Professor theology and natural philosophy, Christian College, Canton, 1896-1898. Returned to the United States, 1899.
Superintendent Chinese mission work in Hawaii, 1901-1909. One of editors of The Friend (newspaper). 1902-1909; delegate Shanghai Missionary Conference, 1907. Appointed Chinese secretary International Reform Bureau, 1908, and acted as legislative agent of bureau at World Conference of Nations on Opium, Shanghai, 1909. Organized a Chinese National Anti-Opium Society and a Chinese-American Association. Appointed honorary adviser on education and opium reform, to Chinese Government Now superintendent Children’s Missionary Bible Study Union, and lecturer on Palestine and Bible Lands in Chinese, Japanese and English.
Also lecturer on China and Japan. Editor of “His Written Word”.
