My earlier papers analyse firm and consumer behaviour under uncertainty in multiperiod models. These papers consider the competitive firm’s search for high prices over time, the monopolistic firm’s responses to random deviations in demand, and the consumer’s commodity and portfolio decisions when portfolio changes incur transaction costs. Later papers attempt to use insights obtained in earlier work to analyse multi-period trading processes when markets need not be cleared each period.
For example, two papers analyse trading in organised securities exchanges which use the specialist system and derive explicit characteristics of stationary market price distributions from properties of the specialist’s price-making decisions. Recent work focusses on the role of explicit, optimising price-makers in purely competitive markets, emphasising the resulting implications for equilibria, adjustments and stability of competitive systems.
