One daughter, Frances Clark Devereux (deceased). Enlisted in United States Army, 1887, and served as non-commissioned officer and instructor of recruits, and later with 6th United States Infantry. Assisted in raising an Illinois regiment for Spanish-American War and commissioned captain by Illinois legislature (services of regiment not required).
Began newspaper work as reporter, Boston Herald, 1882.
Reporter and special article and editorial writer in Chicago, 1890-1903. Washington correspondent Chicago Evening Post, 1903-1931.
Was correspondent in field in Sioux Indian war, 1890-1891, in Garza uprising, Texas, 1892, in France, 1915. An organizer, 1897, Vice-President Illinois Audubon Society for Protection of Birds.
