Commnd. ensign, United States Navy, 1921, advanced through grades to rear admiral, 1945. In naval aviation service since 1924. Commanded United States Ship Breton, 1943, United States Ship Independence, 1944.

Became chief Naval Air Reserve Training, 1946. Appointed commander United States 1st Carrier Fleet in Pacific, 1950.
