After establishing on a firm foundation his Wholesale Newsagency and many other commercial undertakings, directed his energies to public affairs. Has been a member of the Board of Guardians, Durham County ] Council, a.J.P. of the Boro’, and for nearly twenty years sat on the Town Council. Thrice called to the Mayoralty.
Two of these occasions were the Jubilee year of the late Queen, and the Coronation year of King Edward VII. Twice stood in the forefront of municipal battles: on the question of Gas mangement he saved the town £3000 a year, and on that of Water, whilst safeguarding on modern lines a wholesome supply, was chiefly instrumental in preventing the adoption of a costly scheme (£80 000 to £100,000), afterwards admitted to be unnecessary.
