Edward Harper Parker

Parker, Edward Harper was born on January 3, 1849. 2nd son of Edward Parker, surgeon, Liverpool (daughter 1887), and Mary (daughter 1860), daughter of William Rushton, Liverpool.

Education

Studied at Doctor Brunner’s Preparatory School, Everton. Royal Institution School, Liverpool. Master of Arts (Mane.).

Career

Barrister-at-Law, Middle Temple. In the cotton-broking, silk, and tea trades, Liverpool and London, 1864-1866. Studied Chinese under Doctor J. Summers, George Yard, East. C., 1867.

Student-interpreter in Peking, 1869-1871.

Served at Tientsin, Taku, Hankow", Kewkiang, and Canton consulates, 1871-1875. Studied at Middle Temple, 1875-1877.

Served at Foochow". Pagoda Island, Cliinkiang, and Canton consulates, 1877-S0.

Consular - agent at Chungking, 1880-1881. Called to Bar, 1882; acting-consul at Wenchow", 1883-S4.

Temporary vice-consul at Fusan and Chemulpo, 1885-S6. Acting consul - general at Soul, 1886-1887.

Served in Shanghai consulate, 18S7-88.

At Pagoda Island and Hoihow consulates, 1SS9-94. Commissioned His (or Her) Majesty Consul, Kiungchow, 1892. Adviser on Chinese Affairs in Burma, 1892-1893.

At Hoihow, 1893-1894.

Retired on a pension, 1895. Professor of Chinese, the Victona University of Manchester, since 1901.

Reader in Chinese, University College, Liverpool, since 1896.
