Background

Plummer, Edward Hinkley was born on September 24, 1855 in Esperanza, Elkridge, Maryland, United States. Son of William Walker and Harriett Leoj (French) Plummer.

Education

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1877.

Career

Commissioned Second lieutenant 10th Infantry, June 15, 1877. Promoted through grades to colonel 35th Vol. Infantry, December 16, 1899 (organized the regiment and commanded it during its entire service).

Colonel regular army, March 11, 1911. Brigadier general, July 1, 1916. Major general N.A., August 5, 1917.

Q.m. in field, and regimental quartermaster, 1885-1891. Agent Navajo and Moqui Indians, 1893-1894. A.-quartermaster headquarters 5th Army Corps, Santiago, Cuba, in charge all land transportation, wagon and pack trains, July 3-August 17, 1898.

Aide to Major General W. R. Shafter, August 18, 1898-July 4, 1899, and May-July 1901. Commander Fort Egbert, Eagle, Alaska, 1904-1906. At Zamboanga, P.I., 1909-1910.

Commanding 28th Infantry Maneuver Division, San Antonio, Texas, 1911. Provost marshal general and acting mayor of Vera Cruz, Mexico, April-November 1914. Commanding regiment at Dallas State Fair, and military tournament, October 1915.

Various commands in Texas and on Mexican border. Organized Department of Panama Canal, first commander of new department, comprising canal and appurtenances, and troops, April-August 1917. Organized and commanded 88th Division, Camp Dodge, Iowa, August-November 1917.

Visited battle fronts in France, December 1917-February 1918, with 46th British Division, Woevre trench sector, 62d French Division, La Fere sector, 1st United States Division, Mars la tour. Commanding 88th Division, February-March 1918. Discharged as major general N.A., March 14, 1918.

Commanded Fort Sill, Oklahoma, March-October 1918, Camp Grant, Illinois, October-December 1918. Retired as brigadier general, November 30, 1918.
