Served as 2nd in command with British West Charterland Company’s Expedition to Ngamiland, South Africa, under Major F. D. Lugard, Companion of the Bath, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, 1896-1897. In command of Expedition, 1897-1899. Served as a Special Service Officer in South African War.
1899- 1900 (medal with 3 clasps). Political Assistant to the High Commissioner of Northern Nigeria, 1903 - 6. Secretary to the Director of the Imperial Institute, 1908-1910.
Decorated, for service in Burmese and Chin - Lushai Expeditions. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1890; Indian Army; retired, 1906.
