Studied at Bedford Grammar School. Civil Engineering College, Putney. Owens College, Manchester.
Went to India, 1852; served in Opium Department, Patna Agency, 1853-1855. Entered H.E.I. Company’s Army, and appointed to 59th Bengal Native Infantry, 1855. Staff Corps, 1861; Captain 1867.
Major, 1875; Lieutenant-Colonel 1881. Colonel 1885; admitted to Colonel’s allowance, 1893. Served Indian Mutiny.
Present at siege and capture of Delhi with the Jlieend Raja’s contingent (medal and clasp). Appointed to the charge of the exKing of Delhi and family, 22 September 1857, and all other State prisoners. Appointed Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab Commission, 9 June 185S, retaining charge of State prisoners.
Took the ex - King of Delhi and family to Rangoon, arriving 8 December 1858, and transferred to the Pegu Commission. At personal request relinquished charge of the prisoners, 1 April 1859, and reappointed to the Punjab Commission. Almost entire service in civil employ on the North-West Frontier.
Personal assistant to the Commissioners of Peshawur and Derajat. Latterly Commissioner of the Multan, Derajat, and Peshawur Divisions, 1880, then retiring from civil employ and returning to England, 1891. U. S. list, 1893.
During civil employ, among other expeditions, as Assistant Commissioner accompanied the Eusofzie Field Force, January 1866, as Deputy Commissioner, Hazara.
The first Black Mountain Expedition, October - November 1868 (medal and clasp). When Commissioner of Peshawur, as Chief Political Officer, the second Black Mountain Expedition, October-November 188S (clasp). Decorated for second Black Mountain Expedition, October - November 1888, for service rendered as Chief Political Officer. Indian Staff Corps, retired; unemployed supernumerary list.
