Russell, Edward Lafayette was born on August 19, 1845 in Franklin County, Alabama, United States. Son of George Daniel and Emily (Stovall) Russell.

Education

Educated by father; worked on farm until February 1862. Served in 41st Mississippi Regiment, C.S.A., private and ensign. Color bearer of regiment.

When Confed. lines were broken at Nashville retreated to Franklin and swam Harper’s Creek during night to save his colors. Cotton planter after war.

Career

Admitted to bar, 1871. Practiced Verona, 1872. General counsel, May 1876, 1st vice-president and acting president, March 1897, Mobile & Ohio R.R.

Later vice-president and general counsel same, Mobile, Alabama Presidential elector, 1888, 1892, 1896. Delegate Alabama State Convention, on gold standard platform, 1896.
