Served First lieutenant and captain 52d Ohio Infantry, 1862-1865. Captain on staff General William T. Sherman. Was In battles of Perryville, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, Kenesaw Mountain, Jonesboro’ (wounded), and other engagements.

Mustered out at close of war. Admitted to bar, 1866. Author: Northern Ballads, 1874, Soldier and Pioneer, 1879.
