(Excerpt from Chronicon Adæ De Usk: A. D. 1377 1421; Edite...)
Excerpt from Chronicon Adæ De Usk: A. D. 1377 1421; Edited With a Translation and Notes When in the year 1876 I edited, for the Royal Society of Literature, the Chronicle of Adam of Usk, for the first time, from the unique text in the Additional MS. 10,104 in the British Museum, I was at a disadvantage. The end of the MS. was missing, and the chronicle broke off abruptly in the narrative of events of the year 1404. It would then have appeared rash to entertain a hope that the missing portion would ever be recovered. The MS. had already been in the possession of the British Museum for forty years; and who could say how many more had elapsed before that period since the mutilation of the volume? But in the world of letters, as in other departments of human affairs, the unexpected happens with a surprising persistency. In 1885, a quire of vellum leaves, carelessly folded up, was found among a number of neglected documents in a loft at Belvoir Castle, at the time when the Duke of Rutland's collection of papers was being examined and calendared for the Historical Manuscripts Commission, and this eventually proved to be the missing portion of the Additional Ms. and to contain the end of Adam of Usk's chronicle. (This Hand-L ook does not pretend to give more than an out...)
This Hand-L ook does not pretend to give more than an outline of the very large subject of Greek and Latin Palasography. It must be regarded as an introduction to the study of the subject, indicating the different branches into which it is divided and suggesting the lines to be followed, rather than attempting full instruction. It in no way supersedes the use of such works as the collections of facsimiles issued by the Palreographical Society and by other societies and scholars at home and abroad; but it is hoped that it will serve as an aid to the more intelligent and profitable study of them. Our conclusions as to the course of development of the handwritings of former ages are based on our knowledge and experience of the development of modern forms of writing. Children at school learn to write by copying formal text-hands in their copy-books, and the handwriting of each child will bear the impress of the models. But as he grows up the child developes a handwriting of his own, diverging more and more from the models, but never altogether divesting itself of their first influence. Thus, at all times, we have numerous individual handwritings, but each bearing the stamp of its school and of its period; and they, in their turn, react upon and modify the writing of the next generation. (Excerpt from Letters of Humphrey Prideaux: Sometime Dean ...)
Excerpt from Letters of Humphrey Prideaux: Sometime Dean of Norwich to John Ellis Sometimes Under-Secretary of State 1674-1722 Humphrey Prideaux was born at Padstow on the 3rd of May, 1648. He came of an ancient Cornish family, being the third son of Edmund Prideaux of Padstow, a gentleman of good position and of influence in the county. After some schooling at Liskeard and Bodmin, Humphrey was sent to Westminster in 1665, and remained there for three years as King's scholar under Dr. Bushy. From thence he went up to Oxford, obtaining a studentship at Christ Church in December 1668; and took his B.A. degree in 1672. At this time Dr. John Fell, Dean of Christ Church and soon afterwards Bishop of Oxford, was diligently urging on the work of the University press. He forthwith engaged Prideaux to assist in an edition of Lucius Florus, and, when that book was finished, set him to make notes for the work which afterwards appeared as the "Marmora Oxoniensia," and at the same time placed in his hands the History of Joannes Malala to edit. Prideaux was "groaning under the oppression of these two heavy burdens" in 1674, but soon threw off the second one, "a horrid, musty, foolish book," "stuffed with foolish and incredible lies," and devoted himself to the "Marmora," which was published in 1676.
