Bowman, Edward Morris was born on July 18, 1848 in Barnard, Vermont, United States. Son of Joseph and Asenath (Burroughs) Bowman.

Education

Graduated from Saint Lawrence University, Canton, New York, 1856. Studied music from childhood: later pupil Doctor William Mason, New York, and Franz Bendel, Berlin, in piano. In organ, of John P. Morgan, New York, Eduard Rohde and August Haupt, Berlin, Edouard Batiste and Alexandre Guilmant, Paris, and Sir Frederick Bridge, London.

Theory of music with Carl Friedrich Weitzmann, Berlin, Sir G. A. Macfarren and Doctor East. H. Turpin, London.

Career

Organist Old Trinity Church, New York, 1866-1867. Teacher and conductor Saint Louis, 1867-1887. Organist and director music Peddie Memorial Church, Newark, New Jersey, 1887-1894.

Professor and director of music

Vassar College, 1891-1895. Founder, and director of The Temple Choir and Temple Orchestra, 200 members, Baptist Temple, Brooklyn, 1895-1906.

Founder, and director Calvary Baptist Choir, New York, since 1906. President Virgil Practice Clavier Manufacturing Company, New New York Author: Bowman’s Weitzmann’s Manual of Musical Theory, 1876.
