Attorney for Omaha Grain Exchange 15 years, specializing in commerce cases before Interstate Commerce Commission, and established rates that made Omaha a grain market. Member firm Smith, Schall & Howell. President Prudential Savings & Loan Association.

President Omaha Cooperage Company Assistant attorney general of Nebraska, 1896-1898. Mayor of Omaha, 1918-1921.
