(What makes good food good? When Edward Behr sets out to a...)
What makes good food good? When Edward Behr sets out to answer that question, his quest leads from the seemingly prosaic properties of salt and pepper to the differences among vanilla of different origins: Bourbon, Mexican, Tahitian. Plenty is written about food all the time, but only a little of that contributes to a fuller appreciation for and understanding of basic ingredients. Behr does that along with providing mouthwatering descriptions of flavors, textures, and aromas. In The Artful Eater, with intellectual curiosity and physical pleasure, Behr unveils the complexities of bean, roasting, and brewing that make a perfect cup of coffee. He investigates why some cream has much more dairy flavor than others, why gray salt tastes more intense than white, why some Southern country ham is on the same level as great Italian prosciutto. Behr investigates eggs, walnuts, wild and tame sorrel, Atlantic salmon, roast beef, and apples, among other foods. He enriches our enjoyment of eating by tracing the natural origins and cultural history of these foods. By consulting mustard seed brokers in Saskatchewan, mussels growers in Maine, ham curers in Kentucky, a spice merchant in Baltimore, and a walnut researcher in Bordeaux, Behr discovers truths about quality that are all but unknown. The Artful Eater contains a good measure of practical information--there are recipes and advice on the correct use and preparation of food. But at its heart the book is an appreciation of individual ingredients, the excellent raw materials on which all great food depends.

(On the stroke of midnight on January 16, 1920, America we...)
On the stroke of midnight on January 16, 1920, America went dry. For the next thirteen years the 18th Amendment to the Constitution would specifically deny every citizen the right to buy or sell alcoholic drink. Those thirteen years were to change America forever: instead of regulating social behavior and eliminating the scourge of "the Devil's brew," Prohibition incited Americans to bend or break the law by virtually any means possible. In these pages, Edward Behr traces the rise of the Temperance movement from Colonial times onward. Indeed, pioneer America was a free-wheeling, hard-drinking country. Whiskey was so plentiful it was often used for legal - and illegal - tender. Throughout the latter half of the nineteenth century and into the early years of the twentieth, various crusading forces, some well-meaning, some hypocritical, were increasingly demanding an end to intemperance and the abolition of all alcoholic beverages. Between 1920 and 1933, they succeeded. Here is the full, rollicking story of those thirteen years, taking us back to the Jazz Age and its flappers, to the "beautiful and the damned" who drank their lives away in speakeasies; to the Saint Valentine's Day massacre, and to the bootleggers, rumrunners, and high-living gangsters who flagrantly and defiantly flouted the law; to a lady from a Kansas City knitting circle who single-handedly axed a saloon to splinters; to teetotaler Henry Ford's Detroit, where Ford had homes searched to make sure his workers were dry. And, for the first time, Prohibition reveals the full story of George Remus, lawyer turned kingpin of the bootleggers, whose influence reached into the highest echelons of government.

(Long before "Miss Saigon" opened at the Theatre Royal it ...)
Long before "Miss Saigon" opened at the Theatre Royal it was London's most talked about production. Inspired by haunting images of the Vietnam War's emotional casualties and by the story of "Madame Butterfly", Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schoenberg - the team that wrote the musical "Les Miserables" - were inexorably drawn to their vision of "Miss Saigon". First-hand interviews with the impressario Cameron Mackintosh, Boublil, Schoenberg and other members of the team, reveal the magnitude of the challenge presented by the creation of an opera based on a controversial contemporary theme. Edward Behr and Mark Steyn trace the evolution of this theatrical phenomenon from its original inception, through all the behind-the-scenes anguish - the composition, planning, production, orchestration, casting and design. Edward Behr was the Vietnam correspondent for "Newsweek" and worked as honorary consultant on "Miss Saigon". He is the author of "Les Miserables: History in the Making" and "The Last Emperor". Mark Steyn is a broadcaster and music, TV and drama critic for the "Independent".

The biography of a man generally agreed to be one of the most cruel dictators in post-war Europe. It is more than simply an account of the most unacceptable of the Stalinist dictators of Eastern Europe, it also explains how Ceausescu was able to rise to power without having any attribute of intelligence, oratory or charisma. And having achieved power, how he retained it until his execution by a system of informers, secret police and a subterranean city of tunnels under Bucharest. For 24 years of increasing misery the Ceausescu's held power - complete with a personality cult.
