Edwin studied at Oxford University from 1850 to 1856. He became a Master of Arts.
There he studied Indian, Turkish, and Persian languages and published Education in India: A Letter (1860) and a translation from Sanskrit, The Book of Good Counsels (1861). He returned to England in 1861 and for 28 years did editorial work for the Daily Telegraph.
