Entered Royal West Kent Regiment, 1878. Major, 1896; served with M.l. Boer War 1881; Egyptian War, with Military Intelligence, 18S2, including Kassassin (both actions) and Tel-el-Kebir (medal with clasp, Khedive’s star).
Nile Expedition, with M.L Camel Regiment, 18S4-85 (two clasps).
South Africa, 1896.
In command of Military Intelligence and troops in Mashonaland (despatches, brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel, medal). Deputy-Assistant-Adjutant-General Aidershot, 1897-1899.
Commanded Mounted Infantry in South Africa, 1900-1901 (despatches twice, medal with five clasps, brevet of Colonel). Inspector-General M.l.
South Africa, 1900-1902, rank Branch-General.
