Atwood, Edwin Byron was born on September 18, 1842 in Portage Company, Ohio, United States. Son of Edwin and Eliza (Byron) Atwood.


Educated Farmington Seminary, Trumbull Company, O., and Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania.


In 41st Ohio Infantry as sergeant major, September 19, 1861, Second lieutenant, January 1, 1862, First lieutenant, September 8, 1862, captain, May 1, 1864. Brevetted major vols., March 13, 1865, for “valuable and conspicuous service during war”. Mustered out November 27, 1865.

Appointed Second lieutenant 16th United States Infantry, May 11, 1866, and advanced to colonel assistant q. married general, November 1, 1900. Bvtd. First lieutenant March 2, 1867, for “gallant and meritorious services” In battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Captain, March 2, 1867, for same at Chickamauga, and major, March 2, 1867, for same at Mission Ridge.

Brig.-general United States of America, August 2, 1903, retired August 3, 1903, at own request, being senior colonel in quartermaster department United States of America, and serving as chief quartermaster, Division of Philippines, at Manila. Home: Chicago, Ill.
