Spent boyhood on a farm and in village store. In 1866 entered employ of Ticknor & Fields, Boston publishers. In English and German universities, 1875-1879.
Then engaged in lecturing and literature work. Editor New England Magazine, 1889-1901. Several years president Massachusetts Good Citizenship Society, American Free Religious Association, and 20th Century Club of Boston, and director Old South history work in Boston, editing the Old South Leaflets and other publications.
Editor International Library. Director World Peace Foundation. Delegate American Peace Society to congresses of Glasgow, Rouen, Lucerne, Munich and London.
