Townsend, Edwin Franklin was born on July 14, 1833 in New York, United States. Son of Edwin and Ann Eliza Townsend.

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1854.

Career

2d, Katherine Claire Durant, April 19, 1899. Bvtd. Second lieutenant 3d United States Artillery, July 1, 1854. Second in command Lieutenant, January 31, 1855.

Resigned, March 11, 1856. Commissioned First lieutenant, 14th United States Infantry, May 14, 1861. Captain 16th Infantry, May 14, 1861.

Transferred to 25th Infantry, September 21, 1866. Major 27th Infantry, June 22, 1868. Transferred to 9th Infantry, March 15, 1869.

Lieutenant colonel 11th Infantry, March 20, 1879. Colonel 12th Infantry, October 13, 1886. Retired at own request, October 1, 1895, over 62 years of age.

Advanced to rank of brigadier general retired, by act of April 23, 1904. Bvtd. major, April 7, 1862, for gallant and meritorious conduct in battle of Shiloh. Lieutenant colonel, March 13, 1865, for continued and faithful service in ordnance department In Civil War served in Department of the Cumberland, 1861-1862.

In Tennessee and Mississippi campaigns commanding battalion (Army of the Ohio), engaged in march to Nashville, Pittsburg Landing, battle of Shiloh, siege of Corinth, etc., and in command ordnance depot at Nashville, Tennessee, 1862-1865.
